What Is A Tire Rotation And Why Do I Need One?

A tire rotation is the practice of moving the wheels and tires of your vehicle from one position to another, to ensure even tire wear. It can be from left to right or back to front, even diagonally if appropriate.

Tires tend to wear unevenly for different reasons. For example, the weight of your vehicle is not distributed equally between all four corners, and usually only one set of tires is responsible for all the steering duties. Poor alignment or unbalanced tires can also create uneven wear.

Even tire wear is desirable because it helps extend the useful life of a set of tires. It will also make your ride smoother and handling of your car safer. You will also need to change your tires left often if wear is equally distributed within tires, which can save you time and money in the long term.

There are three key things that happen during a tire rotation. First, each tire is removed, and moved to a different position. Second, air pressure and wear of each tired is inspected to identity any issues, adjustments should be done as needed. Third, brakes are inspected while tires are off the vehicle.

Your tires should be rotated approximately every 10,000 kms (about every 6 months) or as soon as any signs of uneven wear or damage are visible. This will help even out wear patterns, extend the life of your tires, and improve driving safety.
